Categories are employed to make the wiki more navigable. Having a few meaningful categories per article makes them easier for readers to navigate. Other times, a list may be more appropriate, such as a list of episodes storyboarded by a particular person.

Categorizing overview[]

Many categories are unnecessary to add to a page due to being automatically transcluded by a template. These categories are marked with {{Transclude only}}.

Categories containing categories[]

Some categories are extremely broad, but remain useful as a navigational tool. To maintain their usability for navigation, they can be designated as containing only subcategories. For example, Category:Writers is part of Category:Show staff, a category which only contains subcategories.

Category names[]

Naming[]

Category names should be as specific as necessary to avoid ambiguity. As a rule of thumb, if a category would need a disambiguation due to its name, it should be renamed. It is unnecessary to specify Craig of the Creek in a category name, since it is implied by being on this wiki.

Formatting[]

Like article titles, names should be in sentence case by default, e.g. Category:Storyboard artists over Category:Storyboard Artists. Redirects should not be created for improper capitalization, since most searches are in lowercase, and the wiki software will suggest the correct capitalization.

Category pages[]

The text of a category page should describe what the contents of the category have in common. They should not be self-referential or describe the category itself (e.g., "This category is/contains", "A list of XYZ"). To inform editors about the status of the category, templates should be used.

Creating a new category[]

In order for a new category to be created, it must be approved by the community or staff. Category proposals should include the name, scope, and reason for creation. Edits adding undiscussed categories to articles will be reverted. Categories should only be created following community consensus or staff decision.

Hidden categories[]

Hidden categories are used for page maintenance. They must be marked with {{Hidden category}}. Do not use the magic word __HIDDENCAT__, as transcluding the template automatically hides the category. Additionally, do not manually add Category:Hidden categories to categories, for the same reason.
